Nearly 3 in 10 young people aged between 15 and 24 years old – 59 million – living in countries affected by conflict or disaster are illiterate, triple the global rate, UNICEF said today.
Speaking additional languages including French, English and Turkish can help Syrian refugees to access higher education and employment, according to a report from the British Council. The report, Language for Resilience, also points out a delicate balance between the importance of language skills as a tool for social integration among refugees and the need to develop the refugees’ home language in order to maintain a sense of belonging.
“B for book, C for car…” repeat a dozen six and seven-year-olds in an English class taught by two refugee volunteers in a makeshift classroom at a Greek migrant camp. In Liberia, many children have been put to work while schools are closed, and Ebola is hurting the economy, says Laurent Duvillier, a communication specialist at UNICEF. The fear now, he says, is that many of these children will never return to school.
