Session Overview: Strategic Research Agenda

Towards a Strategic Research Agenda for Education in Emergencies, Chronic Crises, Early Recovery, and Fragile Contexts

Global Consultation 2009, Istanbul

Thursday 2 April 9:00-13:00, Concurrent Working Session Block 5

Abstract

The aim of this Working Session is to solicit the input of INEE members into the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for education in emergencies, chronic crises, early recovery, and fragile contexts. INEE is currently in the process of identifying and prioritizing key research gaps in our emerging field, with a view to developing a comprehensive and sequenced research agenda that will serve to provide direction and strengthen the limited evidence base. It is expected that the SRA will facilitate the production of relevant, sound and useful knowledge that will be of benefit to the many stakeholders working in this area.

This Working Session will begin with the presentation of an overview of the background and purpose of the SRA, as well as the draft research topics and questions generated thus far. Session participants will then be invited to critique the guiding framework of the SRA, refine and prioritize the list of research needs, and contribute to strategic decisions regarding taking the research agenda forward.

Through wide participation of INEE members, the SRA will provide grounded research questions that reflect the evidence required by practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders to make better informed decisions in the planning and implementation of education programs in crisis-affected contexts.

Session Objectives

  • Objective 1: To identify and prioritize key research topics in the field of education in contexts affected by crisis, in order to enhance global knowledge and capacity in the field.
  • Objective 2: To inform INEE members of the SRA initiative, thus further promoting the coordination of a network of educational stakeholders concerned with emergencies, chronic crises, early recovery, and fragile contexts.
  • Objective 3: To solicit and receive feedback from INEE members on an early draft of the SRA and the process of its development.

Expected Outcomes

  • Outcome 1: Increased awareness of the SRA initiative. The working session will serve to introduce the SRA initiative to the larger INEE community, thereby ensuring wider participation in and input into the development process.
  • Outcomes 2 & 3: INEE member feedback on and input into SRA. The comments generated during this session will be incorporated into the SRA draft and will inform the finalization and dissemination process.
