Personalising and Localising Community-based Disaster Prevention Education – Personal and Professional Tools

Abstract
This learning session will set the stage for community-based disaster reduction work with a brief review of successful efforts to meet special needs of early childhood, people with disabilities, and non-literate populations and mobilization of child-led disaster reduction efforts. Simple tools for personalizing community-based disaster reduction; Family and Organizational Disaster Plans will be examined and participants will identify their own disaster preparedness priorities.
Participants will have the opportunity to examine a wide range of hands-on materials available for disaster reduction education, and evaluate these for content, design, and interactivity. Materials will be assessed for potential adaptation and localization. Participants will also learn about the development of a comprehensive library of disaster reduction educational materials and participate in design of a Learning Management System to streamline adaptation and localization of materials and online courseware for educators and humanitarian actors.Participants interested in this session will also benefit from participating in the working session “Tools for School Disaster Reduction”.
Session Objectives
- Objective 1: To personalize disaster prevention, and identify the many small steps needed and distinguish between awareness, response preparedness and disaster risk reduction.
- Objective 2: To remain sensitive to the special needs of early childhood, people with disabilities and non-literate populations and the special strengths of child-led disaster reduction.
- Objective 3: To identify high quality materials with potential for adaptation and localization, and essential and desired features of an online learning management system for multi-lingual adaptation and localization of available materials.
Expected Outcomes
- Outcome 1: Participants will leave with priorities for their own family disaster plans, distinguishing between risk reduction and response preparedness.
- Outcome 2: A shortlist of promising videos, toys and games, highly rated for effectiveness in disaster prevention and risk reduction education will be developed.
- Outcome 3: Guidance will be provided for online library and repository of disaster reduction educational materials and for online multi-lingual learning management system for translation, adaptation and development of new materials.
