Activities of the Education Policy Working Group

Since its inception the Working Group has led the agenda on education in conflict-affected and fragile contexts, especially in building the evidence and knowledge base on key issues in education in emergencies and crisis-affected settings. Some selected examples of achievements include:

  • Background Paper on Psychosocial Support (PSS) and Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) for Children & Youth. This Background Paper clarifies relevant terminologies and approaches relating to psychosocial support (PSS) and social and emotional learning (SEL) in education in crisis affected contexts, and explores how the two concepts relate to one another. Intended audiences for this paper are education practitioners, academics, and policy-makers working in education in emergencies and protracted crises.
  • Conflict Sensitive Education (CSE) Training of Trainers (July 2017). This four-day workshop built on the INEE CSE Pack previously created in 2014. Members of the INEE Secretariat and INEE Education Policy and Standards & Practice Working Groups organized and facilitated the training. It was hosted by UNRWA and also made possible thanks to two EPWG member organizations USAID and EAA-PEIC. Some 40 education practitioners from agencies working in conflict-affected settings participated in the workshop. The ToT is part of an INEE CSE capacity building initiative, which aims to support the integration of conflict-sensitive education strategies into programming and policies of agencies working in crisis-affected and fragile environments.   • International Conference: Education for a Better Future - Creating Prospects for Displaced Populations (2 Nov 2016). This conference, co-sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and INEE, brought together over 160 international humanitarian and development actors to examine and discuss the role of education and skills development in improving futures for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs); identify main challenges, good practices, and lessons learned; and formulate research, policy and practice recommendations.   • Video: Preventing Violent Extremism. This 5-minute whiteboard video illustrates education’s role in preventing violent extremism (PVE). It looks at some definitions of PVE and the role of education in fostering inclusive and equitable environments, encouraging critical thinking, promoting tolerance and respect for diversity, and thereby contributing to wider social cohesion and the reduction of violence in all forms.
