Webinar: Teacher Professional Development in Crisis Contexts

INEE hosted a free webinar on 29 September 2016 addressing the critical issue of teacher professional development in crisis-affected contexts.

The webinar brought together colleagues from across the world to discuss, question, and consider much needed improvements to teacher support and teacher training. It will explore the recently launched inter-agency Training Pack For Primary School Teachers in Crisis Contexts and the findings from INEE’s report “Where It’s Needed Most: Quality Professional Development for All Teachers”.

In advance of World Teachers’ Day on October 5th this webinar provided a collaborative opportunity for those working to raise teachers’ professional standing, to improve classroom teaching, and to achieve better outcomes for children and young people.

Webinar speakers:

James Lawrie, Senior Education Adviser with Save the Children, has 15 years’ experience as a teacher, researcher, policy adviser and programme manager working in numerous conflict, post-conflict and low-income locations. He plays a leading role on Teacher Professional Development in Save the Children, is on the Steering Committee of the International Taskforce on Teachers for Education 2030, and is the co-editor of the INEE guide Where It’s Needed Most: Quality Professional Development for All Teachers.

Mary Tangelder has over 15 years experience in the education sector, and is the former Project Director for the IRC-University of Nairobi partnership to establish a Masters in Education in Emergencies. She currently lives in Kenya and works as an Regional Education Advisor for FCA, and continues to pursue her passion for creating meaningful learning opportunities that will disrupt, challenge, and transform individuals and communities. 

Charlotte Bergin is Education in Emergencies Policy and Advocacy Adviser at Save the Children UK. She has been working closely with the Teachers in Crisis Contexts Working Group over the last 2 years on the design and implementation of the new Training Pack for Primary School Teachers in Crisis Contexts. A former teacher, Charlotte recently completed her MA at Teachers College, Columbia University and specializes in refugee education, teacher professional development, and education and gender equality. 

 

Background

In a 2015 INEE report, Mary Burns and James Lawrie called for teacher professional development and support in crisis-affected contexts to be urgently ‘re-conceptualized and re-designed’. Their work highlighted the serious challenges facing teachers in these contexts, the limitations of many existing approaches to teacher professional development, and identified seven practical recommendations to transform this.

In 2016, the Teachers in Crisis Contexts Working Group (TCCWG), in close association with INEE, launched a new inter-agency training pack for teachers in crisis contexts. The materials are the product of a unique collaboration and respond to a critical gap in open source, competency-based training materials that provide coverage of the foundational knowledge and skills required by teachers in humanitarian and low-income settings. The materials are designed to be used in a range of contexts by a range of organizations, and they have undergone systematic review and field testing in Iraq and Kenya as well as external review by a range of EiE specialists. The TCCWG is now developing further initiatives to provide ongoing practical support to teachers between and after trainings.

The Teachers in Crisis Contexts Working Group (TCCWG) is comprised of seven partner agencies: Finn Church Aid, International Rescue Committee, Norwegian Refugee Council, Save the Children, Teachers College-Columbia University, UNHCR and UNICEF, working in close association with the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies.
